RETIRING OFFICERS Extracts from 2018 AGM
NEBA would like to thank the following Officers who tended their resignation at the recent AGM.
Secretary - Mary Page approached the job with professionalism, efficiency and such enthusiasm that it energised both the Executive Committee and the NEBA. She was the person to contact if you needed information, and was always willing to help in organising events or meetings. We all grew to rely on her.
Congress Secretary - Gill Gold has steered the Congress to recent success, and last year bucked the trend of declining numbers in bridge events, seeing a substantial increase in entries.
Inter-Club Brian Pacey has been our Tournament Secretary for the competition for 8 years. This was no small task, arranging the leagues and accommodating all the requests from the various clubs. Of course he also had to collate and publish the scores.
Elaine Purvis has been Tournament Secretary for many years. She was responsible for collating and publishing the information of our Direct Entry events. Prior to the new format of these events, she was also responsible for collecting entries – again, no small task.

On Sunday 17th June the NEBA Pairs competition will be played at Wearside Bridge Club and instead of Matchpointed Pairs scoring, we will use Butler scoring. As this will be new to many players, Norman Gray has offered this description for your perusal.
Butler is a form of scoring for pairs events, where each result is imped against the average result for all the tables, sometimes with one or more extreme results removed. The EBU recommended procedure is to remove the top & bottom score for up to 10 results on the traveller, remove the top & bottom 2 scores for 11-25 results and the top & bottom 3 when over 25 results.
Wearside's Bridgeathon will start at 4.00 pm on Sunday 6th May and run for 24 hours to finish on Monday 7th May at 4.00 pm. This is to raise funds for Age Concern, MacMillan and Alzheimer's.
Sessions will run in three hour blocks and players can attend one session or more if they wish.
The session times are: Sunday 4.00 pm to 7.00; 7.00 pm to 10.00, 10.00 pm to 1.00 am on Monday. Then on Monday from 1.00 am to 4.00; 4.00 am to 7.00; 7.00 am to 10.00; 10.00 am to 1.00 pm; 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm. Click HERE for a poster

NEBA NEICKO FINAL
The final is between Clive Owen's team and the Steve Ray team.
It will be held on Saturday May 12th at St. Georges Bridge Club, with a 2:00 PM start.
If you want to come along and watch this exciting match between two of the best teams in our area, the entry is free and the standard of bridge will be high!
These are the ranking scores that go towards the John Clarke Salver
which is presented to the most successful NEBA club for 2017/18.
There was a good attendance spread over 24 hours of 20 tables from various clubs. One member actually played the full 24 hours! There was no overall winner and donations/sponsorship are still coming in but the figure is well over £1000 for the three charities. Members were extremely generous in their contributions and the event was a great success. Allan Davies
