item33ARNOLD DEANE SALVER WINNERS

Congratulations to
NEBA chair, Liz Muir and NEBA selector John Gladders who won the Deane Salver yesterday 4th Jan. at Brunton Bridge Club in Gosforth.
The event attracted a good field of 15 tables including one pair from Huddersfield. Everyone enjoyed the delicious afternoon meal provided by Eunice Ferguson and a band of helpers. Despite the problems with the movement this year, it really is an event not to be missed.

BRIDGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY
I have recently come across an outstanding paper written by Panos Gerontopoulos in 2012

It is an authoritative world view of where bridge came from and more importantly where it may be going. It is well worth 15 minutes of your time

NEBA DRAFT CALENDAR 2018/19
It would be very helpful if club secretaries could thoroughly check the draft calendar and inform Mary Page of any problems ASAP.

NEXT UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
Just a note to say thanks for all the free publicity! I don't think there's any bridge player in the North East now who isn't fully behind team Newcastle!

Next game is 26th February.

Cheers

Jonathan.

item31Another splendid win for the Newcastle University team captained by NEBA bridge player Jonathon Noble takes them within one win of the semi finals.
After an impressive 215-130 win over the University of Southampton in the second round, Newcastle's first quarter final result was an equally convincing 225-130 win against Bristol University.

2 & 3 LEVEL OPENING BIDS

SOME POSITIVE FEEDBACK
Hi Neil,
I want to commend you on your excellent Bridge website.  I live in the US and stumbled across your sight while googling.  I have found nothing here that compares to your in-depth explanations.  I am a struggling novice and wish I could attend your classes.  I am challenged by the game, but also frustrated and often wonder if I’m wasting my time. My bridge center offers classes, but few opportunities for practice.
Anyway, thanks for a great site!

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
Congratulations again to Jonathan Noble's Newcastle University team.    Another confident performance has placed them in the quarter finals. Jocelyn Gordon

item20WINNERS - Guy Herzmark, Peter Avery, Brenda Osborne & Frank Springett

2018 NIMAN ISRAEL
A record 16 teams competed for the 2018 Niman Israel competition on Saturday 6th January. NEBA hope that the renewed interest in this competition - that previously had been cancelled for four consecutive years through lack of interest - is a sign that friendly competitive bridge is regaining its popularity.
Stannington is a convenient spacious venue with good lighting/seating and the AMAZING meal provided by Anne Bell & Chris Stenning make this an event not to be missed. The competition, directed by Chris Benneworth ran like clockwork.
2nd place was tied between
Neville Davies, Margaret Davies, Heather Morrow, Peter Kelly and the Darlington team of Eric Knight, Pauline Knight, Nichola Cockerill-Smith, and Beverley Godfrey.

NIMAN ISRAEL
ENTRIES ARE NOW CLOSED as we cannot accommodate any more than the 16 tables that have already entered. An excellent start to 2018!

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE
Newcastle University's second round match against the University of Southampton will be broadcast on BBC 2 on Monday 8th January 2018. Newcastle's captain is Jonathon Noble who plays bridge regularly at a number of clubs around Newcastle. We wish them every success.

Happy New Year!
