Last weekend, 2nd-4th November, the NEBA held its annual Congress, at the Marriott Hotel in Gateshead. It was very well attended, with 20 tables for the warm up Open Pairs on the Friday, 30 tables in the Swiss Pairs on the Saturday, 29 teams in the Swiss Teams on the Sunday and 10 tables of Newcomers. Over the weekend, I received not one comment of negativity, and plenty of comments of how much everyone was enjoying the event. The hotel staff looked after us magnificently, including the restaurant.
The NEBA owes a huge thank you to the team of Directors who ran the event so smoothly – they were Norman Gray, Nigel Durie, Ann Caygill and Alan Lester. They worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event. And also to the helpers before and after the event, who helped set up, and take down the room – Paul Gray, Eric and Ann Bell, Bernard Shepherd and David Gold. I also want to thank Gill Gold. Although she has now retired from the role of Congress Secretary, it was her donkey work over the years that has led to the success of the Congress this year, and made my job so much easier.
I hope that, after such a successful event this year, many more NEBA members will enter the event next year. If you missed it this year, I assure you, you missed a great weekend!
